September 4 -- MEETING.   Wil Hershberger, nature photographer and sound recorder extraordinaire, and former president of the Frederick Bird Club, will present a talk on “Yellowstone,” the world’s first National Park.

September 13 -- GAMBRILL STATE PARK.   Barbara Gearhart will lead us on a quest for fall migrants in Gambrill State Park. Walking may be uphill and vigorous depending on where the warblers are. Please call Barbara (301-473-9889) if you are coming.

September 20 -- FREDERICK COUNTY FALL COUNT.   Mike Welch will coordinate our ninth county-wide fall census. Call Mike (301-874-5828) to be placed with a team or assigned a territory. Tally Rally at the Welch’s.

October 2 -- MEETING.   Gail Mackiernan, world traveler from Montgomery County, will entertain us with a program entitled “Uganda- Birds and Mountain Gorillas.”

October 11 -- LILYPONS.   Mike Welch will lead a joint Frederick-Montgomery trip to this popular local birding spot. We’ll look for Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow and other fall migrants. Please call Mike (301-874-5828) to let him know you are coming.

October 18 -- FALL AT AUDREY CARROLL.   David Smith will lead a trip to search for those pesky little brown jobs (sparrows) and other migrants! Please call David (410-549-7082) if you are coming.

October 25 -- HAWK BANDING DEMONSTRATION.   Tom Humphrey will demonstrate his hawk banding process, with a location to be determined. Call Tom for more information (301-696-8540).

November 6 -- MEETING.   Local hawk bander Tom Humphrey will provide tips on identification of raptors and observations on behaviors “not in the books.”

November 8 -- TOWN HILL.   We will visit the Town Hill Hawk Watch. This time of year is good for Northern Goshawks and Golden Eagles. For those wishing to make a weekend of it, the B & B across from the Hawk Watch is a delightful place to stay. For information and reservations, contact David Smith (410-549-7082).

November 22 -- QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY.   We will visit birding spots across the bay bridge. The exact itinerary will depend upon what has been reported. Please call Lois Kauffman (301-845-6690) if you are coming.

December 4 -- CHRISTMAS DINNER AND MEETING.   Hank Kaestner, who travels the world in search of birds while checking out spices for McCormack, will entertain us with “In Search of My Zornis” (whatever that means). Dinner will be held at the Cozy Restaurant in Thurmont at 6:00 at a cost of $14.50 per person. Please make reservations with and send money to Treasurer Nancy Parker before 11/26/08.

December 14 -- CATOCTIN CHRISTMAS COUNT #59.   Call Mike Welch (301-874-5828) to participate.

January 4 -- SUGARLOAF CHRISTMAS COUNT.   Contact Helen Horrocks (301-831-6315) if you can help out.

January 8 -- MEETING.   Clive Harris, an expert on gull identification from Montgomery County, will help us identify those tricky gulls.

January 11 -- AUDREY CARROLL MID-WINTER COUNT.   Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:30AM. Dress warmly with waterproof boots. Call David Smith (410-549-7082) for further information.

January 18 -- FRED ARCHIBALD MID-WINTER COUNT.   Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:30AM. Dress warmly with waterproof boots. Contact Bob Schaefer (301-831-5660, rjs30@erols.com) for further information.

January 24 -- C & O CANAL MID-WINTER COUNT.   Make-up date will be Jan. 25 if the weather is bad. Contact Peter Vankevich (PeteVankevich@gmail.com) or call 202-468-2871 to get involved with this count.

February 1 -- FREDERICK COUNTY MID-WINTER COUNT.   Call David Smith (410-549-7082) to sign up. Tally Rally at Dave and Carol’s house.

February 5 -- MEETING.   Members’ Night. This is a chance for members to bring in a few slides of a favorite birding activity to share with the group. Collectively, we travel far and wide and do lots of interesting things, so this will be your chance to share with the group. Call Kathy Calvert (301-698-1298) if you would like to participate.

February 21 -- EASTERN NECK NWR AND KENT COUNTY.   Mike Welch will lead us around Kent County hot spots, including Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, in search of Ross’s Goose and other wintering birds. Call Mike (301-874-5828) if you plan to go.

March 5 -- MEETING.   (Please note location change to the Urbana Library) Bob Schaeffer will show photos and talk about his trips to Maine and Canada, including Bonaventure Island and Nunavet, and a near-death experience at the hands of a black guillemot.

March 7 -- TIMBERDOODLES.   at Audrey Carroll. David Smith will lead us on an evening search for American Woodcocks. Bring a flashlight. For information call David (410-549-7082).

March 14 -- BLACK HILL REGIONAL PARK.   Mike Welch will lead us on a trip to the lake at Black Hill Regional Park in Montgomery County, one of the best places for wintering waterfowl. Red-necked Grebes, Canvasbacks, and Redheads will be among the species we will be seeking. For information contact Mike (301-685-3561).

March 29 -- HUGHES HOLLOW.   Jim Green will lead us around Hughes Hollow and nearby sites in northwestern Montgomery County. This wetlands area is good for waterfowl, wintering song birds, and Red-headed Woodpeckers. For information, call Jim at 301-208-2393.

April 2 -- MEETING.   Marcia Balestri will let us travel vicariously through Cuba, with photos and tales of her trip to that normally inaccessible country.

April 18 -- EASTERN SHORE.   [ NOTE new info for this event ] Lois Kauffman will lead us around some Eastern Shore hotspots to look for early arriving warblers and lingering winter birds. Call Lois (301-845-6690) if you plan to attend or for other information.

April 26 -- FREDERICK COUNTY BIG DAY.   Help us find as many species as possible in Frederick County in one day. We will put together teams to try to cover the county. You can start at any time and finish at any time. Call Mike Welch (301-685-3561) if you would like to participate.

May 2 -- C & O CANAL WALK.   We will go from Point of Rocks to Lander for migrating warblers. Be sure to do your neck exercises beforehand. Call Kathy Calvert (301-698-1298) for further information.

May 3 -- FRED ARCHIBALD MAY COUNT.   Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:00AM. Contact Bob Schaefer (301-831-5660, rjs30@erols.com) for further information.

May 7 -- MEETING.   Mike Welch bird quiz - can you identify birds from photos and sound recordings? Some easy, some not so easy. You will not be graded!

May 9 -- FREDERICK COUNTY MAY COUNT #45.   Join the crowd for our local county-wide census. Lots of help is needed! Contact Mike Welch (301-685-3561) to assist.

May 10 -- AUDREY CARROLL MAY COUNT.   Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:00AM. Call Dave Smith (410-549-7082) for further information.

May 15-17 -- MOS ANNUAL CONFERENCE.   Frederick is hosting this year. We need lots of volunteers. Call Kathy Calvert (301-698-1298) if you can help.

June 4 -- MEETING - ANNUAL PICNIC.   We are trying a new location this year--Utica Park, north of Frederick. Bring binoculars, a dish to share, plate, drink and utensils. We’ll meet at 6:00PM for birding and eats.

June 6 -- WESTERN MARYLAND.   Mike Welch will lead us to some hot spots in western Maryland to look for some of the local breeders, including Least and Alder Flycatchers, Golden-winged and lots of other Warblers, and Henslow’s Sparrow. Call Mike (301-685-3561) for information.

June 11 -- CHAPTER PLANNING MEETING.   Everyone please come to our 2009-2010 planning meeting and volunteer to give a program or lead a field trip. We need new ideas and suggestions. Meet at 7:00 PM at Kathy Calvert’s house. Call Kathy (301-698-1298) for information and directions.
